I’ve been reading a lot about Carl Jung, an iconic psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who founded analytical psychology.

Jung dared to explore the mysteries of the unconscious and the shadow self. He had a lot to say about the collective wisdom that binds us all.

These a few of his brilliant quotes on that have changed my perception of reality. I’ve learned more from Jung on confronting my own darkness.

Here are a few of Carl’s wise words to help us understand the depths of human psyche.

1. “No tree, it is said, can grow to heaven unless its roots reach down to hell.”

You can’t reach your full potential without confronting the darkness within.

“Hell” symbolizes life’s struggles, fears, insecurities, and past hurts. These challenges are your roots, providing the foundation for growth.

We need a foundation in our “shadow selves” — our flaws, insecurities, and negative emotions. Ignoring them weakens us.

Your shadow self is everything you push down, those “darker” aspects you deem unacceptable. It can be anger, jealousy or a deep-seated fear of failure. But these emotions hold valuable information.

They are key to understanding yourself better.

You see where your anxieties stem from and why you react a certain way. Self-awareness then becomes key to personal growth.

Owning your shadow doesn’t make you weak.

So, don’t shy away from your darkness. It’s a necessary part of who you are. By acknowledging and integrating your shadow, you build strength and wisdom to become whole — a complete and conscious version of yourself.

2. “Where your fear is, there is your task.”

We all have fears.

Public speaking, starting something new, leaving a toxic relationship — these can trigger anxiety and hold us back.
